OpenGulf

Data Visualization, Digital Humanities, Interactive Maps

OpenGulf is set of interconnected digital projects focusing on historical documentation about the Gulf. OpenGulf was launched in the Arts and Humanities Division of NYU Abu Dhabi. The projects publish open historical datasets, corpora and digital exhibits with the aim of opening Gulf Studies to digital historical exploration, analysis and interpretation in the service of open research and pedagogy.
With OpenGulf, I worked on data analysis and manipulation of the annotations made on the historical texts collected by the team. Using this refined data, I worked on visualizing it by making visually stimulating maps of these areas and their attributes. I also worked on training a HTR model using Transkribus and FromthePage to transcribe handwritten Gulf archives from the 19th century. Additionally, I worked on the OpenGulf website design and development.
